The Tata Nexon has been available for sale in the Indian market with the internal combustion engine powertrain from 21 September 2017 and the battery pack from 28 January 2020. These vehicles have already received mid-life upgrades, and now the carmaker is all set to launch the next-generation versions somewhere in the year 2027.
Recently, the new-generation model has been spotted testing on Indian roads wearing zebra camo to hide what changes it got on its exterior. The manufacturer will introduce its second-generation model with both powertrains that are offered with the current generation but may have a new engine, motor setup and lithium-ion battery packs.
It’s been almost nine years since the nameplate made its debut in the Indian market. This sub-4-metre SUV is one of the best-selling cars from Tata Motors. To strengthen its positioning against the rivals and boost sales, they are preparing to launch the 2nd Gen, which will come with a totally new avatar with smart and high-tech features.
The spied image shows that outside it has a more upright C-pillar, completely redesigned rear doors, and a less-sloping roofline compared to the outgoing model. Its A-pillar and flatter rear windscreen are more angular, the tailgate is totally redesigned, and the roof-integrated spoiler is larger than the earlier one. Other noticeable features are the revised rear bumper, wider rear haunches, and modified wheel arches.

The spied image doesn’t show the front-end portion, but the major upgrades and changes are certain to the lighting signature, grille, and bumper. The ICE will have an all-new grille, giving a totally different look than earlier, and the battery electric will have a closed body grille with a lighting style similar to the ICE and lower air intakes on the bumper.
The test mule image shows it will be a little longer, wider, and taller than the outgoing model. A little increase in the wheelbase is also anticipated, enhancing the legroom for second-row passengers. Since an increase in the vehicle’s size is certain, the boot space is also likely to be better than before, making it more convenient to carry luggage.
Tata Motors has internally codenamed it as ‘Garud’, which is being developed on a heavily modified X1 architecture. While no report explicitly mentions this, the vehicle’s appearance suggests it will exceed 4 metres in length, meaning it won’t fall into the sub-4-metre segment, so its price could be slightly higher than that of the outgoing one.

Reportedly, the carmaker achieved a milestone of 10 lakh sales in February 2026. As of July 2026, the sales figures have crossed the mark of 11 lakh. A total of 1,109,711 units have been delivered so far since the launch in September 2017. The breakdown of the same is inside the table.

On a year-on-year and month-on-month basis, Tata Motors registered 36.23% growth with 4,646 more sales and 4.71% degrowth with 864 fewer sales, respectively.
The next generation will significantly improve Nexon sales in both powertrains. As of now, they haven’t confirmed any date for its debut in the Indian market. The second quarter of 2027 is a highly anticipated date for it, because the first electric vehicle under the Avinya banner is already slated for unveiling and launch in the first quarter.
