The Mitsubishi Pajero, a body-on-frame midsize SUV, was on sale globally from 1982 to 2021. The first-gen, second-gen, third-gen, and fourth-gen were on sale from 1982 to 1991, 1991 to 1999, 1999 to 2006, and 2006 to 2021, respectively. Almost 5 years after the nameplate was discontinued, Mitsubishi Motors, the Japanese automaker, has finally revealed the fifth generation on September 2, 2026.
Reports suggest that the carmaker will first launch the model in Thailand and then in Japan, after which the model will go on sale in Australia and other countries. For now, there’s no confirmation regarding its launch in the Indian market. As the earlier models were on sale in India, we are expecting the new-gen model to go also on sale.
The company has introduced the model as off-roader for drivers looking for a vehicle for adventure driving. They have revealed the model globally by releasing the exterior and interior images, and even its core specifications are now available in the public domain. Let’s have a closer look at this recently unveiled vehicle.
Dimensions and exterior
The length, width, and height are 4,920 mm, 1,925 mm, and 1,910 mm, respectively, with a wheelbase of 2,870 mm and ground clearance of 230 mm. Compared to fourth-gen, the newly introduced model is 20 mm longer, 50 mm wider, and 10 mm taller; and it has a 90 mm longer wheelbase and 5 mm more ground clearance.
Upfront, it has a tall and upright stance with the strong horizontal design theme, large horizontal-bar pattern grille, distinctive T-shaped headlight, and sculpted bonnet. Its sides feature powerful and flared fenders with sculpted body surfaces, black square-off wheel arch cladding, mechanical door handles, side steps, roof rails, and ORVMs with blinkers on the A-pillar.
The rear boat’s roof-integrated sport spoiler, shark fin antenna on the roof, horizontal taillight connected with the back trim in the center that has Pajero lettering, vertically oriented taillamp on the edges, Mitsubishi logo at the tailgate, large windscreen, and rugged bumper horizontal reflectors.
Interior and features
The cabin has a round-shaped four-spoke steering wheel with physical buttons on it and the Mitsubishi logo. The interior has a camel interior color theme with black contrast elements. The dashboard has two 14.3-inch screens; one is placed behind the steering wheel, acting as a digital instrument cluster, and another is at the dashboard’s center as an infotainment system.
A total of seven seats are available in a 2-3-2 layout with a higher seating position for the driver. Its second and third row seats are designed for improved body support. The second-row seats have 150 mm sliding features. Its front row seats are ventilated, and to enhance the cabin’s premiumness, it features premium upholstery and soft-touch cabin surroundings.
Other notable features inside the cabin are a three-zone climate control, a 12-speaker sound system that was developed with Yamaha to ensure an immersive sound experience, and a 3D Multi Around Monitor with four cameras around the vehicle that creates a 3D view of the Pajero and its surroundings.
Underpinning and suspension
The fifth-gen Mitsubishi Pajero is based on the current Mitsubishi Triton architecture to ensure structural rigidity, cornering stability, durability, and also reliability on rough terrain. It uses Triton-derived front suspension architecture, and the rear has a sophisticated five-link setup to ensure better ride comfort, improved bump absorption, and enhanced wheel control on type of terrains.
Powertrain and performance
Under the hood, it gets a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder single variable geometry turbocharged diesel-powered internal combustion engine that is mated with the eight-speed automatic transmission. It delivers the maximum power of 150 kW (204 PS) and peak torque of 480 Nm. Its drivetrain is Super Select 4WD-II, and vehicle dynamics are Super All Wheel Control (S-AWC).
It does have a low-range gearbox and rear differential lock. A total of seven driving modes are available; they are Normal, Eco, Gravel, Snow, Mud, Sand, and Rock. It features a 3,500 kg braked towing capacity. The acceleration timing for 0 to 100 km/h, top speed, fuel efficiency, and other core specifications are still pending; the carmaker will unveil them with the launch of the model.
