Mercedes Brings PHEV to S-Class for the First Time in India at ₹2.20Cr

Mercedes-Benz, the German automobile manufacturer, officially launched the S-Class S 450e facelift on June 15, 2026, in two variants: Launch Edition Exclusive Line and Manufaktur Edition AMG Line. The former costs ex-showroom ₹2.20 crore, and the latter is available at ₹2.38 crore.

Compared to the model the manufacturer discontinued for the Indian market, the new one is 35 lakh rupees costlier. Its main rival in India is the BMW 7 Series, which is offered in two variants, 740i M Sport and 740d M Sport, whose ex-showroom prices are ₹1.81 crore and ₹1.84 crore, respectively.

The S-Class S 450e Facelift is a plug-in hybrid electric flagship sedan from the brand; they have already started booking through their company’s website, and delivery for this PHEV will take place in early November 2026, during the festive season. Let’s have a closer look at this recently launched sedan.

Powertrain and performance

The S-Class S 450e facelift gets a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6 petrol internal combustion engine, a 22 kWh lithium-ion battery pack underneath the rear section of the floor, and a permanent magnet synchronous motor mated with a nine-speed automatic gearbox on the rear axle. Since the PMSM is mounted on the rear axle, it features a rear-wheel drive drivetrain.

Notably, the combined maximum power output is 435 hp and peak torque of 680 Nm, which helps this sedan to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.7 seconds and go up to a maximum speed of 250 km/h. Its emission-free range is 115 km under Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicle Test Procedure conditions. It supports DC chargers up to 60 kW, which take only 20 minutes from 10 to 80 percent charging.

The S-Class S 450e Facelift is built on Mercedes-Benz’s MRA (Modular Rear Architecture) platform, whose front suspension is four-link independent and rear is multi-link independent with the AIRMATIC adaptive air suspension system.

It also features E-Active Body Control that adjusts the damping of each wheel individually and gives comfort even on rough roads, and rear-wheel steering that turns the rear wheel opposite to the front wheel when running at slow speed, which reduces the turning radius, which helps in easily turning on compact roads and parking, and enhances the stability of the car when running at high speed.

All wheels get ventilated disc brakes for powerful braking and better heat absorption. It features an anti-lock braking system, electronic brake-force distribution, brake assist, an electronic stability program, a traction control system, and regenerative braking, which charges the battery pack every time the brake lever is pressed, resulting in improved pure-electric range.
