Tata Motors has announced that from September 1, 2026, the price for cars on sale in the Indian market will see the ex-showroom price increase by ₹25,000. This will mark the third price hike from the carmaker in 2026. Firstly, they increased the price by 0.5% on April 1, 2026, for cars on sale with internal combustion engine powertrains, and then on July 1, 2026, by 1.5% for not only ICE but also for the battery-powered vehicles.
This time the price hike won’t be happening as a percentage but as an amount for both ICE cars and EVs. Notably, not each single variant of all the models are going to get a similar price increase; for different variants and models, it is set to vary from one another. Just like the last two times, the reason behind the price hike this time is also rising production costs. The company is raising vehicle prices with the aim of covering these production costs.
Tata is not the only company that is increasing prices for passenger vehicles; other brands such as Hyundai and Maruti Suzuki have also increased their prices because of rising production cost. It is yet to be seen if the third price hike from Tata Motors will affect all models or recently launched models such as the Tiago facelift and Tiago EV facelift launched on May 28, 2026, and the Sierra EV introduced domestically on June 30, 2026.
Currently, they are selling a total of nine models in the Indian market with ICE powertrains that are Punch, Nexon, Tiago, Sierra, Safari, Harrier, Tigor, Curvv, and Altroz; and even battery electric. The models that are available also as EVs are all in the ICE lineup except the Altroz and Safari. By the festive season of 2026, the Safari will also be available for sale as an EV as a flagship offering with three rows of 6/7 seats, competing with the Mahindra XEV 9S.
The maximum price hike is anticipated for the top-end variants of the Harrier, Harrier EV and Safari, because they have a greater scope of absorbing the ₹25,000, as they already cost around ₹25 lakh, although Tata Motors is yet to reveal the actual increase near the date from which the increase will come into effect.
From the price hike, mostly those buyers are going to be affected who have made a plan to purchase a car around Diwali. The most affordable passenger car under the Tata Motors banner is the Tiago; its starting ex-showroom price is only ₹4.99 lakh, and the most costly is the Harrier EV; its top-speed variant is available for sale with the price of ₹28.99 lakh.
Details regarding the minimum hike are still pending; it may be around ₹10,000. Even if the Tiago’s base variant gets a minimal experience price hike in September 2026, then it will cost ₹5.09 lakh, while the Harrier EV with the maximum hike will be available for sale at ₹29.24 lakh.
Till the launch of the Safari EV, the Harrier EV may remain crowned as the most costly offering from the brand, but after the Safari’s arrival in India with a pure-electric powertrain, it won’t. The existing Safari as is costs up to ₹27.32 lakh, so we are expecting that its pure-electric counterpart will be available in the Indian market with a price up to ₹30 lakh.
In July 2026, the highest price increase was ₹22,000. The model whose price was increased by this amount is the Harrier Adventure X Plus Petrol MT. It is often observed that vehicle sales dip slightly after a price hike; whether this happens with Tata Motors’ vehicles after the September 2026 price hike remains to be seen.
Following the Tata passenger vehicle price hike in July 2026, sales data for the same month shows that out of a total of nine models under the Tata Motors banner, including both ICE and EV variants, six recorded positive sales figures compared to the previous month, while three saw a decline; overall, there was no significant impact.
