The upcoming Toyota Fortuner that has been referred to as the next-generation model in many reports has finally got a global debut date. Notably, the Japanese automobile manufacturer Toyota is yet to confirm if it is a new-generation model. A few reports suggest that it is going to be a heavily upgraded second-generation version.
Whether this upcoming SUV will be a new generation or an updated version of the current generation is something we will find out with its global debut. Toyota South Africa, via a report in CarMag, has officially confirmed that the global debut will happen on December 1, 2026.
Things regarding its launch in the Indian market are still pending. Reportedly, in the Indian market, this upcoming Toyota SUV will go on sale in the Indian market in early 2027. Toyota, which operates in India as Toyota Kirloskar Motor, will soon announce the actual launch for this SUV.
The India launch date is still pending.
For the upcoming Toyota Fortuner India launch, things are still unofficial. Reports suggest that Toyota’s Indian subsidiary is planning to introduce it in 2027 after launching the upcoming Toyota Innova Hycoss. Notably, its facelifted sibling will go on sale in India in December 2026, as per the report. Outside India, this upcoming SUV has been spotted testing on public roads multiple times.
When the India launch draws near, we may get to see its test mule being tested here too. Most recently, this Toyota SUV was spied testing in Thailand. The spy shots of the same were shared by ‘Kurdistan Automotive Blog.’ These online surfaced images have revealed a few details about this upcoming car. On the first sight, you will find its silhouette to be similar to the outgoing model.
New design details.
The familiar silhouette further strengthens the report of the upcoming Toyota Fortuner being developed on the IMV ladder platform, the same architecture that also underpins the current-generation version. The spied images show the car in heavy camouflage, due to which the exterior design changes are still under the wrap. Reports suggest major upgrades not only on the exterior but also inside the cabin.

Observing the spied images of the upcoming Toyota Fortuner closely, we find out that upfront it will be a new grille with a mesh-like pattern. The large A-pillar mounted ORVMs, mechanical pull-type door handles, and prominent roof rails look familiar. The spy shot clicked from the back, showing the horizontal-shaped LED taillamps, but the exact lighting signature is still pending.
Dimensions may be retained.
If this upcoming Toyota Fortuner were to retain the existing architecture, then the dimensions would be relatively the same. For clarity, the second-generation Toyota Fortuner that has been on sale in the Indian market since November 7, 2026, measures 4,795 mm longer, 1,855 mm wider, and 1,835 mm taller with a 2,745 mm wheelbase and 225 mm ground clearance.

If there will be no dimensional changes, then even the seating layout and boot space will remain the same. The outgoing model has a 2-3-2 seating layout and has a cargo capacity of 296 litres behind the second row that is expandable up to 716 litres by folding the second row. In case of any changes in size, the boot space may be enhanced, but the seating layout may be retained, as per the report.
What about the features and powertrain?
Reportedly, the upcoming Toyota Fortuner will come with major enhancements inside the cabin. The panoramic sunroof and other premium features are additionally reported. Reports even suggest the cabin will receive major feature upgrades similar to what we see with the recently launched Toyota Hilux pickup trucks, such as a large infotainment system, an updated digital instrument cluster and more.
Powertrain options for this upcoming SUV for the Indian market will remain the same as the existing version. Notably, the outgoing model is available with a 2.8-litre Diesel Neo Drive 48V Mild Hybrid, a 2.8-litre Turbocharged Diesel, and a 2.7-litre naturally aspirated petrol. Even the transmission and drivetrain options are expected to be similar to be carried forward, as per the reports.
