The upcoming Nissan Terrano PHEV with the plug-in hybrid electric powertrain has been spotted testing, whose design seems quite similar to the concept car that was showcased back in the 2026 Beijing Auto Show. With the unveiling of the concept version, the carmaker said that its production model will arrive within 12 months.
Almost four and a half months have passed since its unveiling, and now it is being spied on again; its production model has been spied on. Any date for its global debut isn’t yet confirmed by the manufacturer; the report suggests it happens by late 2026 or early 2027.

The spied image of the production model Nissan Terrano PHEV confirms that this upcoming electrified car will be similar to the concept version in terms of design. It has a boxy body, rugged appearance and upright stance, giving a tough look.
In the spy shots, the vehicle is highly camouflaged but reveals a few details clearly, such as a sculpted bumper, black wheel arch cladding, A-pillar-mounted ORVMs, pull-type handles, and interestless headlights. Furthermore, it has a roof-integrated spoiler, a side-opening door with the spare wheel, a vertically orientated taillamp, and a thick rear bumper.
One of the spied images also reveals its interior; the cabin has a four-spoke steering wheel with physical buttons, a long central tunnel with a wireless phone charging pad, cup holders and a hidden compartment. Other features that the cabin has include a horizontally orientated digital instrument cluster and a larger infotainment touchscreen at the dashboard’s centre.
What else do we know about the upcoming Nissan PHEV?
Nissan, the Japanese automobile manufacturer, is jointly developing it with Dongfeng, the Chinese carmaker, not only for Chinese but also for ASEAN and Middle East countries. Things regarding its launch are still uncertain; as the Japanese carmaker already operates in India, we are expecting that they may bring this model here too.
The global debut of the Nissan Terrano PHEV will happen in China, and then it will go on sales in other countries. This vehicle is set to get an internal combustion engine and permanent magnet synchronous motor under the hood and also a battery pack. The EV-mode range is set to be above 100 km and combined to around 1,100 km.
The report suggests that this can borrow the powertrain from Frontier PRO PHEV, which gets a 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol-powered ICE, two electric motors, a 4-speed Dedicated Hybrid Transmission, an Electrified Intelligent AWD drivetrain, a 135 km EV-mode CLTC range, and a 320 kW (435 PS) peak power output.

In the Indian market, Nissan is selling only four models: Nissan Magnite, Nissan Gravite, Nissan Tekton, and Nissan X-Trail. All these are internal combustion engine powered vehicles. The Terrano nameplate was on sale in India until 2020 with the ICE powertrain; if they launch the all-new PHEV counterpart for the Indian market, the nameplate will be reincarnated almost after six years.
In August 2026, they sold only 3,426 units in the domestic market and exported 5,924 units; the total sales were 9,350 units. On a month-on-month basis, the domestic sales have decreased by 24.2%, but on a year-on-year basis, they have increased by 147%. In early 2027, they are all set to launch a C-segment SUV that will have a three-row and seven-person seating capacity, which may boost their sales.
The Nissan Terrano PHEV is highly anticipated to be introduced to the Indian market because with the launch of the MG Hector Tomahawk PHEV, the game to make the strong positioning in the segment has already started; by December 2026, BYD is also going to launch their PHEV for the Indian market, and also a Jetour T2-based plug-in hybrid electric SUV is coming under the JSW banner in 2027.
