A report from Fortune India says that Maruti Suzuki, the Indian automobile manufacturer, is working on a small electric car for the Indian market, which may make its debut in 2027. The carmaker has already launched its first electric vehicle, the Maruti Suzuki eVitara, which has been on sale from February 17, 2026, through the Nexa dealership, whose starting ex-showroom price is ₹16.19 lakh.
The upcoming electric vehicle from Maruti Suzuki, whose nameplate is still unconfirmed, will go on sale with a starting price of ₹8.5 lakh, and they are all set to sell the second EV mode under the Arena dealership. This EV is set to be designated for middle-class families with decent range, smart features, five seats, and good boot space to make it appealing for drivers looking for an affordable EV.

Maruti Suzuki will introduce its second pure-electric car targeting the affordable mass-market EV, which will mainly compete with the Tata Tiago EV. The report confirms that this upcoming e-car will be based on a dedicated EV platform; it won’t be derived from any model that is already on sale with an internal combustion engine powertrain.
The report doesn’t mention its size, but we are expecting it to be around 3.6 meters (3,600 mm) longer. This upcoming EV may offer a range under 250 km on the MIDC condition, positioning it as ideal for city and suburban driving. As it is set to compete with the Tata Tiago EV, a lithium-ion battery pack of around 25-30 kWh is anticipated.
The cabin of this car will be minimalist with the soft-touch trims for the dashboard and doors and fabric upholstery for the seats. A touchscreen infotainment system and digital instrument cluster on the dashboard are certain. Other features that it may get are six airbags, a four-speaker sound system, and phone-charging USB ports.
Could this upcoming small EV be the Suzuki e-Sky?
After the Fortune India report, many EV enthusiasts in India are discussing that the upcoming small electric car from Maruti Suzuki can be the Suzuki e-Sky, which was recently unveiled in Japan as an answer to the BYD Racco. Notably, not the carmaker and not even the report mentioned it. We are expecting it to be a totally new nameplate with an SUV-like body for ensuring enhanced practicality and excellent energy efficiency.
The Suzuki e-Sky, which they unveiled recently, measures 3,395 mm in length with a wheelbase of 2,460 mm. This car is equipped with a 26 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, giving the 310 km claimed range; the real-world range may fall short by up to 15% of the claimed figure depending on driving style. Its cabin has a three-spoke steering wheel with physical buttons and a 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen with wireless smartphone connectivity.
This upcoming Maruti Suzuki e-car may outbeat other EV sales.
Maruti Suzuki is the automobile manufacturing company in India with the highest sales in the passenger vehicle segment, a position it has held for years. Tata.Cars ranks second, but it will take a long time for them to reach the top spot, as the gap in monthly sales between the two sometimes exceeds even 1.3 lakh units. July 2026 car sale data shows that the gap between them is 133,592 units.
Seeing Maruti Suzuki’s strong market presence, it is likely that their upcoming small e-car will receive a positive response from Indian drivers upon launch; furthermore, since it is expected to be sold through the brand’s Arena dealerships, it will be accessible to a wide range of customers. The only EV model, eVitara, has had sales of 10,247 since its launch is 10,247, with 870 in February, 2,254 in March, 2,006 in April, 1,439 in May, 2,003 in June, and 1,675 in July.
