At the 2026 Barretos Rodeo Festival, the Volkswagen Tukan, a compact pickup truck, for Brazil and other Latin American countries. It is set to replace the Volkswagen Saveiro, also a compact pickup that is on sale from September 1982. The Brazil market launch will happen in early 2027, and then it will compete with the Fiat Strada, the bestselling pickup in the company.
The model is all set to be available for sale with both single-cab and double-cab layouts for late business or fleet operators and small business and private buyers, respectively. The single-cab variant will have two seats, one for the driver and another for the co-passenger, and a large cargo bed, and the double-cab seat will feature 5 seats in a 2-3 layout with a decent cargo bed.
In terms of design, the front-end and rear of both the single-cab and double-cab are similar. Upfront, we get a full-width LED daylight running light with the Volkswagen logo at the centre. The main headlamps are placed on the sides just below the DRL strip, which consists of both high-beam and low-beam. At the front, the fog lamps are also available; they are integrated with the bumper.
At the back, it has horizontally orientated taillamps and a Volkswagen logo on the tailgate that can open downward and can also be placed flat by hooking. The back bumper has steps for easier access to the cargo bed and convenient loading and unloading. On the edge of the rear bumper, it gets a vertical reflector that illuminates during the night, making it visible to others if taillamps are turned off.
On the sides, the double-cab version gets black pull-type door handles, side steps for easier ingress and egress for the second two, ten-spoke mono-tone blacked-out alloy wheels bracketed with squared-off black wheel arch cladding, A-pillar-mounted ORVMs with slim horizontal reflectors, blacked-out pillars, side body cladding for protection, and a grab rail connected with the cargo bed.
On the other hand, the single-cab version doesn’t have a second row, so all the features related to it are present on it, such as the side step, C pillar, and grab rails. Instead of alloy wheels, it uses steel units of the same size. Notably, it has small roof rails and bed cleats on the cargo-bed sidewall that help in mounting luggage securely.
The dimensions of the Tukan are yet to be revealed. It is set to be different from one another for double-cab and single-cab versions; the wheelbase and ground clearance for them may remain the same. This pickup underpinning the platform is derived from MQB, which the German carmaker also used for making Polo, Tera, Nivus and T-Cross.
Since it is a pickup, it has a rigid rear axle with leaf springs for durability and high load-carrying capability; it is a standard feature in pickup truck in the segment; even its main rival uses the same. Volkswagen is yet to reveal its core specifications, so details about its powertrain are still uncertain. They will reveal these details with the launch, whose date is also unconfirmed as of now.
Reports suggest use of a 1.6-litre four-cylinder naturally aspirated flex-petrol with manual transmission in the base variant, focusing on fleet operators. The mid-range trims are anticipated to use the 1.0-litre TSI flex with the 8-speed automatic transmission, and the top-end variants are set to make their debut with the 1.5 TSI Evo2 with a 48V mild hybrid or the 1.4-litre TSI with an automatic.
For now, Volkswagen has made plans to introduce it only in Latin American countries, including Brazil. If they get a good response from buyers, they may also launch it in the Asian market. Its launch for the Indian market may also happen. If the German automobile manufacturer launches the Tukan in India, it will compete with the recently previewed Mahindra Scorpio Lifestyler.
