BYD India Teases Its First PHEV – Sealion 6 or Atto 2 DM-i Coming Soon
The Indian subsidiary of Chinese automobile manufacturer Build Your Dream, BYD India, has released a teaser image, which shows ‘BYD DM-i,’ ‘Super Plug-in Hybrid EV,’ and ‘Coming Soon.’ The teaser says that they will launch a plug-in hybrid vehicle very soon, which is built on the brand’s DM-i hybrid technology.
Notably, the teaser by the carmaker is released within a week after the spotting of BYD Sealion 6 DM-i on a public road in Tamil Nadu, as we reported earlier. So, we are expecting that the PHEV they are planning to introduce in the Indian market may be the same; however, the confirmation is still awaited.
Reports are also suggesting that the upcoming PHEV from BYD for the Indian market may be BYD Atto 2 DM-i, which is already on sale globally. It was also spotted testing on public roads in India, but it has been more than half a year since then. Its most recent spotting reported in the country was in August 2025.
Whether it’s Sealion 6 DM-i or Atto 2 DM-i from BYD, one thing is now certain that the Chinese automaker is also set to launch a plug-in hybrid vehicle in India. This is all set to be the first model from BYD to come with the plug-in hybrid powertrain, because all the previously introduced ones are fully electric vehicles.
The upcoming PHEV from the brand is going to be the sixth model in India that will make its debut. As of now, only four are available for sale, which include the BYD Atto 3, BYD Seal, BYD eMax 7, and BYD Sealion 7; the BYD e6, the first model launched in India by the brand, is already discontinued after sales decline.
Notably, BYD hasn’t received the India-spec Sealion 6 DM-i and Atto 2 DM-i, but one thing is confirmed: they will be introduced in the Indian market with the same powertrain that they are available for sale globally with. Let’s have a closer look at each of these PHEVs.
BYD Sealion 6 DM-i

The Sealion 6 DM-i is expected to get a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated petrol engine under the hood with a permanent magnet synchronous motor on the front axle, whose combined power output is 217 ps and peak torque is 300 Nm. Set to be equipped with an 18.3 kWh LFP Blade battery pack to power the PMSM, its emission-free driving range is most likely to be around 140 km.
Globally, it is also available with the dual-motor setup, which combinedly generates the peak power of 234 PS and torque of 550 Nm. It is still uncertain whether only FWD or both, i.e., FWD and AWD, will be introduced in India. Reports say that it may be available for sale in the Indian market with the ex-showroom price starting from 38 lakh rupees for the base and going up to 42 lakh for the top-end variant.
BYD Atto 2 DM-i

The Atto 2 DM-i is available for sale in the international market with the front-wheel drive drivetrain. It is offered with two LFP BYD’s Blade battery packs that are 7.8 kWh and 18 kWh; the standard one gives the pure-electric WLTP range of 40 km and 90 km, respectively. Notably, the combined range is 928 km for the base variant and 998 km for the top trim. It may launch with a price between 20 and 30 lakh rupees.
The PMSM mounted under the hood with a 1.5L NA petrol engine generates the combined power output of 166 hp and 212 hp with the standard and larger battery pack, respectively, but the peak remains 300 Nm with both. The interior is set to be equipped with a 12.8-inch rotating touchscreen infotainment system at the center of the dashboard and an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster before the driver’s seat.
