The State of EV Charging Infrastructure in 2026: Numbers Behind America’s EV Boom!
The use of EVs across the globe is increasing rapidly, and the US is one of the countries that are seeing adoption of EVs at a good pace. As of now, the EV charging infrastructure across the country is quite developed, but there are still many challenges. Here, we have discussed the state of EV charging infrastructure in 2026.
The State of EV Charging Infrastructure in 2026
There are more than 80,000 charging locations across the United States, and the number of charging ports is 242,048 as of April 1, 2026. The number of charging stations is increasing rapidly across the country, and very soon it will be the same as the number of gas stations. The table shows how many EV charging ports are in each state of the country.

The number of EVs registered across the US stands at 4,503,700, and the number of total charging ports is 242,048, meaning for each 100 electric vehicles, there are 5.3 charging ports available in the country.
DC Fast EV Charging Network
Out of total charging ports, 71,398 are DC fast chargers at the 15,121 stations. Individually, the Tesla has a higher number of fast charging ports; it is 36,877, and two-thirds of them are available in North America for non-Tesla EVs.
The top 10 DC charging service providers in the country have a total number of 60,973 ports, which is 85.4% of the market share. The table shows how many DC chargers in the US are available from different charging networks.
| Network | Number of Charging Ports |
| Tesla Superchargers | 36,877 |

EV Charging Major Challenges
Even though the charging infrastructure is developed significantly in the country, there are still technical problems at the charging station. The major problems are slow charging and unsupported charging, because of which EV owners have to face problems.
It’s true that the EV charging services have increased rapidly in the US, but only in urban areas; in rural areas, there are very few charging stations. That’s why individuals belonging to rural areas are still unsure about switching to electric vehicles.
The federal government has many programs to develop the charging infrastructure across the country, but the development is quite slower than expected. In the US, many of the projects related to EV charging are still in the development phase, which may take years to be completed.
EV charging costs across the country are slightly different from one another for each network, and their payment systems are also not centralized, so people have to use different applications and cards to pay; basically, it makes the process a little complex.
